When I went to Cornell Ornithology Lab web site and listened to recorded calls for both Cooper's and Red-Shouldered, my hawk definitely makes the call of the Red-Shouldered and nothing like Cooper's. Breeds in forested areas; more common in suburban areas than Sharp-shinned Hawk. Also, since female raptors can be about a third size larger than males, a female Merlin or Sharp-shinned Hawk can be nearly the same size as a male Cooper’s Hawk.
