As "Forbidden Dream" opens we see the legendary King Sejong (played by Han Suk-kyu) being carried around in his palanquin through a serious rainstorm. The palanquin, which serves as the catalyst for the story, is also a thing of sheer beauty. This leaves "Forbidden Dream" in the awkward place of having some extraordinarily strong high points even though at over two hours the story drags and is just plain boring. Please log in again. The two actors, who were last seen together in the 1999 Korean New Wave masterpiece “Shiri”, bring their A-game to the feature and give truly memorable performances. We then see the equally legendary court inventor Jang Yeong-sil (played by Choi Min-sik) stubbornly bracing for his fate as the obvious scapegoat to the incident. Bild- und Tonbewertung. Has good tips for utilizing South Korea's public bus system. Release date in Korea: 2019/12/26. Jang Yeong-sil is always coming up with ideas for wacky gadgets, and King Sejong is astonished by the natural wonders Jang Yeong-sil reveals to him. The best parts of the story are in these flashbacks, as the two talk about their common love, with two key scenes, one under the open sky as the two talk and stargaze and another on a dark, rainy night inside the King’s chamber as Jang Yeong-sil attempts to recreate the night sky for him, being standout moments of these earlier, happier times. King Sejong loves Jang Yeong-sil's fearless nerdiness, as Jang Yeong-sil will babble on at length on just about any complex scientific subject. But I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that it can’t last. I let out a gasp of horror at one point. The props department must have had a fine time building this complex structure where balls travel through wooden pipes to finally strike a gong. Using both the scientific advances and the creation of the alphabet as a backdrop, it tells of Sejong’s great friendship with Jang Yeong-sil, an inventor and astronomer who Sejong had a lot of affinity for. The problem is that none of this is particularly interesting or relevant to the bromantic chemistry between Han Suk-kyu and Choi Min-sik. As the heartbroken Jang and Sejong both resign to thinking that they’re finally to be pulled apart, the narrative flashes back to the early years of the monarchy, when the young King met slave innovator and dreamer Jang Yeong-sil, who shared his interests, dreams and hopes and went on to become one of his dearest friends. Using both the scientific advances and the creation of the alphabet as a backdrop, it tells of Sejong’s great friendship with Jang Yeong-sil, an inventor and astronomer who Sejong had a lot of affinity for. Sejong dreamed these devices and Jang Yeong-sil made them a reality. With “Forbidden Dream”, Hur Jin-ho has manages to craft a truly exquisite Joseon version of the bromance, which puts the friendship at the centre of a broader story which otherwise seems auxiliary only because of how strong the portrayal of that relationship is. The powerhouse working in this film impressed me with the ability to tell stories with one line. The narrative arc is logical, and probably a decent approximation of what actually happened to the real Jang Yeong-sil. While "Forbidden Dream" is beautiful as a brotherly love story about the two greatest men of an era, too much much of the screentime gets bogged down in arcane politics and statecraft. Forbidden Dream (2019) Korean Film review dramasrok 2 Comments Forbidden Dream is the story of the fruitful but ill-fated relationship between two heavyweight historical figures: King Sejong the Great (r.1418–1450) (Han Suk-kyu) and his famous scientist Jang Yeong-sil (Choi Min-sik). Forbidden Dream is a highly coveted feminized cannabis strain from Humboldt Seeds. Staff writer. An avid collector of physical media, I would say Korean cinema really is my first choice, but I'll watch anything that is south-east Asian. This part involves more of the people around the two instead and make the two mere helpless bystanders as the events take their own course. Beautifully made. First meeting as King and a mere slave in the time-keeping department, the two form an attachment over a common interest in time and the stars, over reaching for the unreachable, over dreaming the undreamable. Sejong the Great, the fourth King of the Joseon dynasty, is widely considered as one of the greatest rulers of ancient Korea. The cinematography captures the amazing set designs and costumes sumptuously, while the many inventions of Jang Yeong-sil are wonderfully realised. 2019 ‘천문: ... Review by Rhythm Zaveri ★★★★ I could honestly watch Choi Min-sik and Han Suk-kyu sit at a table discussing what they had for breakfast, but seeing them in a Joseon era bromance between King Sejong and inventor Jang Yeong-sil is a great joy. He really does push the limits magnificently. Well, predictable in the dramatic sense. The human drawn carriage completely falls apart apart to the wailing of his loyal retainers. It just came out on Netflix here. Forbidden Dream. The courtiers also want to put the blame of the wheel of the palanquin breaking on Jang. I’d heard of Jang Yeong-sil but didn’t know that he came from the servant class and this adds another dimension to the story that I wasn’t expecting. It’s the mid 15th century. Joseon is a tributary state of the Ming Dynasty. In a bid for independence, King Sejong develops science and technology in Joseon. William Schwartz can be contacted via william@hancinema.net. Forbidden Dream is the story of the fruitful but ill-fated relationship between two heavyweight historical figures: King Sejong the Great (r.1418–1450) (Han Suk-kyu) and his famous scientist Jang Yeong-sil (Choi Min-sik). The background score also deserves appreciation, making even a simple action of putting on a particular robe seem ominous. That person, as it turns out, is Jang Yeong-sil, the head of the court’s scientific department and a dear friend of the regent. While these narrative choices are understandable, the 132-minutes runtime could surely have been truncated down and tightened up to revolve more around them. Lest die Antwort in der Rezension, die klärt. The other was in “Forbidden Dream” by melodrama supremo Hur Jin-ho, returning to the historical genre after “The Last Princess”. Well, two men really. We never even meet a queen or a concubine. Still, the parts that I can remember clearly shine all the more brightly in memory. But King Sejong dreams of leading an independent country that doesn’t rely so much on its more powerful neighbour. Chinese characters are still the only writing system in Joseon despite the languages being different. The human drawn carriage completely falls apart apart to the wailing of his loyal retainers. Oddly enough, because it is such a joy to see this part of the story transpire, the events that take place in the so-called “present day” of the storyline pale in comparison. Of course the king’s plans upset the Ming Dynasty. see more from dramasrok about life in Korea on Facebook Pinterest and Instagram. This slightly Indica-dominant hybrid is a great choice for those looking for a plant that grows quickly and delivers bountiful harvests. The powerhouse working in this film impressed me with the ability to tell stories with one line. We learn how, a few days ago, the Ming envoy demanded Sejong take his time-telling devices apart and follow the Ming timing as well as hand over the person responsible for making them. There are lots of nuances that both actors bring to their acts, but it is when they are both together in the flashback scenes that the film soars to great heights. Hello, my name is Rhythm Zaveri. I’ll look for the film, it sounds fascinating. So you could say, ‘it’s rooster o’clock!’ I wrote more about that here: How did they tell the time in the Joseon period? Jang Yeong-sil not really understanding politics is such an important thematic plot point it's really weird that director Heo Jin-ho is just intrinsically expecting us to be able to follow along. We have entered a man’s world. The login page will open in a new tab. They're just presented as bystanders with limited power to react to events beyond their control. And there are plenty of ministers in the Joseon government who don’t want to rock the boat with their powerful neighbour.
