An amazing book that held me enrapt the whole way through. Aust tries to stay objective but, although it's clear he supports the official line of the Stammheim deaths, the evidence he throws up in its defence contradicts it, leaning more toward murder or state sanctioned enablement of the suicides at the very least. The book is very well deve. I honestly had never had any exposure to this part of German history and could only halfway follow what was happening. |, August 5, 2019 is a look at politics taken to its bitter end by group for whom compromise was not an option. Incidentally, Oliver Stone ended his George Bush biopic by playing Bob Dylan's 'With God on Our Side' over the final credits. The account of the hijacked plane is edge of the seat stuff. The beginning of everything appears to have been the visit of the shah of Persia to Berlin in 1967. however, aust must be also be lauded for his ability to portray bo, albeit a very interesting insight not only into the political makings of this group, but also the political consciousness forming in Germany and the rest of the world post-WWII/during the Vietnam war, Aust sometimes fails to draw a coherent narrative. Some passages are quite thrilling such as the one where the German special troops storm into the hijacked plane in Mogadiscio. The Baader Meinhof Complex. Immediately afterwards the gang's car is stolen and Baader rails against the Italian thief. Amazing how the ideals and Utopias from the 60's gradually degenerate into a nonsense violent political movement with a very small number of members, none of them very sane from the head and, at the same time so influential. | Rating: 3/4 Still, while the film isn't as gripping as it perhaps could have been, well, it's still pretty gripping, having moments of looseness to its grasp, but enough potency to catch your investment, as well as your eyes. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie. It really angered me greatly watching this film, despite the fact that I love the acting and the realistic account of the terrorist acts, I still can't help but feel scared and disgusted by what these dirty left wing liberal hippies can do. I grew up with protests against the Vietnam War and with radical leftist organizations like the Weathermen and the RAF. When I discovered this book by Stefan Aust I was excited about the opportunity to read it. This is a riveting account of how the idealism of opposing the rise of the right wing in 1960s and 1970s West Germany began to emulate the same atrocities and intolerance within its own ranks through an embrace of violent means. "The Baader Meinhof Complex" is an ambitious attempt to chart the group's rise, fall and tentative rebirth over the course of a decade, when it called itself the Red Army Faction. The RAF were perhaps a little more mysterious because they were in far off and, at the time, divided Germany so I was always interested in them. Edel stands to soak up the kick of this subject matter a bit more, but he makes sure that intrigue rarely abates, even when he's the one challenging intrigue with cold spells, and with Edel's inspiration going joined by inspiration within artistry, writing and acting, the final product is left to stand as pretty rewarding. This is largely due to the outstanding cast. The careers of Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Meinhof inspired one of the finest German pictures of the post-war years, Margarethe von Trotta's The German Sisters (1981), about the lives of the daughters of a stern Protestant minister from the 1950s to the late 1970s. The Baader-Meinhof Group through kidnappings, bombings, hostage-taking, murder, and bank-robbery protested what they called the fascist state of Germany and also the U.S. bombings and involvement in Vietnam. I was too young to remember the RAF, and its initial operations in the early 70s. A human rights demonstration - shown as raucous but peaceful - is set upon by pro-shah goons. Joseph Conrad's classic works of psychological and moral insight, Under Western Eyes and The Secret Agent, for instance, help us understand the terrorists of the late 19th and early 20th century, and Uli Edel's The Baader Meinhof Complex brings back the terrible events in the Germany of the 1960s and 1970s in a manner that clears and focuses the mind. In the end, however expansive, action-packed and powerfully shot The Baader-Meinhof Complex undoubtedly is, it remains a disturbing hybrid that leaves the viewer jaded… There's a hilarious moment at a terrorist camp in Jordan when the visiting Germans tell their Palestinian comrades that sexual liberation and social revolution go together. That's right, I took this film's premise and figured out how to turn it into a Jeff Foxworthy reference, and if you don't find that impressive, then, well, you're probably not here in the South with me. I felt like I was sitting with the author as he told me about the events, each day. It was hard for me to personally decide whether I truly enjoyed this film or I wished it never existed. When I discovered this book by Stefan Aust I was excited about the opportunity to read it. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Efficiently reviewed by the late, great Christopher Hitchens here – an analysis I won’t try and improve upon – I enjoyed this film, tracking the rise of the titular characters as they shift from vague notions of late ’60s political activism to outright and bloody violence, and (ultimately) suicide in the late ’70s. A great book. A fascinating piece of German history told by an author who was personally acquainted with several members of the group and pla. The group later known as the Red Army Faction continued its terrorism through the 80's and 90's, but this account focuses on the years 1970-77 from its inception with Baader, Ensslin, and Meinhof. The RAF and their sympathisers identified a neo-Nazi tendency in West Germany that gave support to American imperialism in the developing world, the suppression of Palestinians in Israel and the exploitation of the poor everywhere. And of course, this should happen in Germany, in the 70's. |, September 26, 2017 Edel's mix of historical footage and dramatized scenes provide little more than a breezy history lesson. In order to improve effectiveness, the RAF attempted to ally with other radical groups, such as the PLO. One becomes a tough feminist journalist, weary of extremism, the other, initially dedicated to public service with Albert Schweitzer, abandons her husband and child to train as a terrorist in the Middle East and ends up with the RAF, committing suicide in jail. While some thrills were certainly expected out of this film, I was also fearing some dry spells, of which there are luckily hardly any in this effort, which still has moments in which its pacing gets to be too steady for its own good, giving you the opportunity to see just how bloated this film is at two-and-a-half hours, taking on one too many story layers, and packing on too much excess material, to be all that smooth of a ride. crime, ( Log Out / ‘The Baader Mainhof Complex’ captures many of the nuances of this troubled time, and as with other recent German films (‘The Lives of Others’, ‘Goodbye Lenin’), recreates the era with exceptional clarity. You're almost there! I lived at the time in Europe, and as a teenager I had my thoughts influenced by the Rote Armee Fraktion and Italian Brigate Rosse... they had more sympathisers than the governments using force as a persuasive method. Baader appears to take nothing away from the experience, other than a redoubled determination to maintain his anger levels. The primary focus of the book is on the founding members of the group called variously the Red Army Faction, the Baader-Meinhof group or the Baader-Meinhof gang (the first by the group itself, the latter two by supporters or detractors, respectively), a group that was active from 1970 th. In a self-fulfilling prophesy they pushed Germany towards becoming a police state. All the cliches and hairstyles are present and correct. The film's flaws are limited, but those subtle complaints end up going quite the distance in retarding momentum to a degree that holds this pretty promising project back as overlong, formulaic and even a touch distant. R (Graphic Nudity|Disturbing Images|Language|Sexual Content|Strong Bloody Violence), drama, In the end, however expansive, action-packed and powerfully shot The Baader-Meinhof Complex undoubtedly is, it remains a disturbing hybrid that leaves the viewer jaded, bizarrely perplex and ultimately unsatisfied. While knowledge of the group's inner workings and communications between its members and lawyers as well as the government's efforts to halt the group is valuable, much of the detail isn't.
